Nadal vs. Davydenko Match Analysis
Here is some match analysis done by Steve Shulla – a tennis player and
enthusiast who works at the IMG/Bollettieri Tennis Academy.
One of the best matches at this year's Italian Open was the Men's Semifinal between Rafael Nadal and Nikolay Davydenko. If you missed this match on the Tennis Channel, you missed a real heavyweight clay-court slugfest. The best of three set match went the distance and lasted three hours and 38 minutes - it was clay court tennis at its best.
Each player was hitting huge ripping ground strokes, running their opponent from corner to corner and over every inch of the center court, to the delight of the packed stadium crowd at Foro Italico in Rome. The skill, speed, power, athleticism, discipline, and determination of both players was on full display. Davydenko was the aggressor for most of the match taking the fight to Nadal. Nadal took the role of the counter-puncher, waiting for Davydenko to make the slightest mistake so he could seize the advantage. Throughout the match, Davydenko was able to use his quickness to take Nadal's massive topspin ground strokes on the rise and drive them hard into the corners. He was also able to pull Nadal way off the court by taking balls early and driving them crosscourt and short in the court. When he had Nadal pulled off the court and in a defensive position, he raced to the net to cut off Nadal's defensive reply.
Nadal, on the other hand, was using his counterpunching skills to perfection making Davydenko hit perfect shots to win points. After two exciting tiebreak sets of this pummeling tennis, the match was dead even. At four all in the third set, with Davydenko serving and both players slightly tiring, Nadal forced Davydenko into a few errors and broke serve for a 5-4 advantage. Nadal then served out this fabulous match and secured his 76th match victory in a row on clay, breaking John McEnroe's record of 75 in a row on the indoor carpet. These types of matches make me proud to be a tennis player. Congrats to Rafa and Nikolay for a great match.
